A National Geographic NOVICA Adventure in Guatemala

Recently, I had the amazing opportunity to travel to Guatemala with Wanderlust’s Laura Grier to assist her and document a National Geographic NOVICA catalog shoot. After photographing the gorgeous, former Miss Guatemala, Laura Godoy at a private residence in Antigua, Guatemala, we traveled to Lake Atitlán. And the trip transformed into into one of those epic adventures that you never see coming.

First, I should tell you that Lake Atitlán is a remarkable 13-mile wide body of water surrounded by three volcanoes. Second, you should know that there are several villages at the lake populated by the descendants of indigenous Mayan people. And lastly that we had the chance to visit San Juan, a village that you can only get to by boat, to meet with NOVICA artisans that actually made the goods we photographed the day prior.

Cecilia, one of the artisans, invited us into her home, introduced us to her 95 year old grandmother, and taught us three weaving techniques that they use to make the  scarves our model was wearing. It was an inspiring trip and one that can only be summed up with a video. Everything you’re about to see was a collaboration between Laura Grier, Sarah Natasha, Ronda Gregorio and yours truly.
